Blue Moon (15)

Screening on Friday 8th May, at 7.30pm. Doors open at 7pm.

In BLUE MOON (15), Ethan Hawke stars as legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart. The film follows Hart as he struggles with the collapse of his personal and professional life during the opening night party for Oklahoma! – the hit show created by his former creative partner.

As part of the legendary Broadway songwriting team with composer Richard Rodgers, Hart was responsible for famous numbers like The Lady Is a Tramp, Manhattan, My Funny Valentine and Blue Moon. But exasperated with Hart’s alcoholism, unreliability and depressive outbursts, Rodgers broke with him and partnered with Oscar Hammerstein II to write Oklahoma! and then a raft of stage and screen smashes.

The film imagines the deeply depressed Hart in Oklahoma!’s first-night New York audience in 1943, looking on with envious despair as the show proceeds. He knows a hit when he sees one – and feels himself descending into failure. He slips away to drown his sorrows at Sardi’s bar which will later that evening be the site of the opening night post-show gathering in wait of the critic reviews.

Directed by Richard Linklater, this Oscar and BAFTA nominated film also stars Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale and Andrew Scott.
